Farm2Fork cultivates technology for food security, transforming agriculture with innovation, sustainability, and community empowerment at its core.
South Africa is considered food-secure, meaning the nations food production sector produces enough food to sufficiently feed every citizen. The South African population is expected to grow from ~55 million in 2020 to 82 million by the year 2035. Food production and processing must more than double to feed our expanding population. This food production increase needs to be achieved with the same or fewer natural resources. Farmers, processors and the entire value chain have to overcome climate variability, global pandemics and other adverse conditions to achieve this growth.
Our key focus area to help support the food production industry extract efficiencies from the value chain is optimizing and digitising at every sensible stage from farm to fork.
It is a well-known fact that small scale farmers in South Africa and on the continent do not necessarily have access to key markets, are being exploited and not always get their yields worth through conventional channels, stifling the growth of the country’s agricultural sector, and thus our national food production capacity.
Farm2Fork is an initiative born out of the desire to support vulnerable producers, provide all buyers with an endless range of options and connect all the key stakeholders in the value chain of this essential sector by leveraging the Farm2Fork marketplace platform.

Government, Buyers or Donors:
The platform will enable a marketplace ecosystem which will enhance the transparency between producers (farmers), buyers, government and funders.
The platform will report on and compare future demand to help preempt any challenges before they arise.
Farmers:
Small-scale commercial farmers will have free access to an entirely digitised virtual marketplace where they can sell their goods seamlessly without the burden of transporting their produce to a large market. But with all the same benefits, legality and transparency of the conventional municipal market.
The platform adheres to industry standards so farmers can load their consignments onto the system with ease. The system furthers speedy payment of farmers for produce and transfers to the
Funding Allocation:
The current approach by government and the private sector lacks collaboration and integration between disparate systems.
This results in an overlap of effort and the inability to deploy centrally managed resources to areas that might have a more dire need.
Limited insight on the available funds or funds used for products across the country.
The limited ability to understand areas under/over capacitated (food, funding, personnel).
As the number of vulnerable impacted citizens increase during the current crisis, we need to understand how the people processes, civil societies and NGO’s are empowered to deal with the growing food demand.
The barrier to entry of the mainstream fresh-produce value chain is very high for small-scale commercial farmers. On harvest, they need immediate liquidity to ensure production capacity is achieved, and they sustain their operations.
By deploying our centralized platform, our partners should be able to:

Centralise reporting on supply & demand requirements
Trace products through the entire value chain up to the point of local community interventions and programs and

Our 3-Step Process
Production Point
The platform works with the respective small scale producers to understand:
- The consignment of fresh-produce that is available to go into the market
- The minimum quality standards and requirements to be met
- The volume of fresh-produce available across the market
Engagement is then held with the respective pre-delivery Hub to ensure the to synchronise logistics needs and space requirements.
Aggregation Hub
The aggregation hub is an ad-hoc shared facility for various small-scale commercial farmers. Here pre-delivery quality check requirements are facilitated to ensure the fresh-produce is of acceptable quality and standard before being dispatched to the physical market/storage or end customers facilities. The Hub is a central node where all consignments will be co-ordinated.
Market Point
The “Market” is the Farm2Fork ‘Digital’ Platform that allows the visibility of product at the respective hubs and recognises for the centralised transacting of the “buyer” with one or more farmers.
